The Muscular - Skeletal System page
SMOOTH SKELETAL CARDIAC
There are about 650 muscles in our body. The muscular system works with the skeletal system to help us move. There are 3 main types of muscles.
Muscles can be voluntary or involuntary
Muscles work in pairs to create movement. When one muscle contracts the other muscle relaxes. Example are the Biceps and Triceps in the upper arm that cause your elbow to bend and extend.
Babies are born with 300 bones some of which fuse together by age 4 to make the 206 that we have. The main functions of the skeletal system include:
1) Production of red and white blood cells
2) Provide support
3) Store important minerals such as Calcium
4) Protect important organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and the brain
5) Enable us to move
